On Mount Carmel, the prophet Elijah confronted 450 prophets of Baal in a dramatic showdown recorded in 1 Kings 18. After repairing the neglected altar of the Lord and drenching the sacrifice with water, Elijah prays simply, and God answers by sending fire from Heaven, proving He alone is God and turning the hearts of the people back to Him.

J.C. Penney: The Golden Rule is Not Enough!
Thursday Apr 30, 2026
Thursday Apr 30, 2026
Join host Greg Dowdy on Traveler’s Tales as he retells the surprising spiritual journey of James Cash Penney — the man behind the J.C. Penney empire. This episode traces Penney’s early life in Missouri, his family’s faith influence, and the founding of his first store in Kemmer, Wyoming, which grew into a national chain built on the Golden Rule: “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.”
The episode covers Penney’s extraordinary rise in business, the establishment of the J.C. Penney Company in 1913, and the devastating 1929 crash that wiped out his fortune, damaged his health, and exposed a deeper spiritual void. Penney realized he had been living off "spiritual capital"—the inherited faith and moral principles of his upbringing—rather than maintaining an ongoing, personal relationship with God. But that all changed!

Hymn Lyrics: At Calvary
1. Years I spent in vanity and pride, caring not my Lord was crucified, knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary.
Refrain:Mercy there was great and grace was free; pardon there was multiplied to me;there my burdened soul found liberty, at Calvary.
2. By God's Word at last my sin I learned; then I trembled at the law I'd spurned, till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary. [Refrain]
3. Now I've giv'n to Jesus ev'rything; now I gladly own Him as my King;now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary. [Refrain]
4 O the love that drew salvation's plan! O the grace that brought it down to man! O the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary! [Refrain]

At the age of 23, George Beverly Shea (1909 – 2013) had a hard decision to make. He could accept a job offer in a secular singing position in New York City, with a great salary and wide respect; or he could continue singing in churches and on Christian radio programs. The poem God used in his life became "I'd Rather Have Jesus."

1 I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold;I'd rather be His than have riches untold;I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands.I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:Than to be the king of a vast domainor be held in sin's dread sway.I'd rather have Jesus than anythingthis world affords today.
2 I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause;I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;I'd rather have Jesus than world-wide fame.I'd rather be true to His holy name [Refrain]
3 He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom'He's sweeter than honey from out the comb; He's all that my hungering spirit needs.I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead [Refrain]
